about

I had this simple, droney riff come to me a few years ago as if my 1929 guitar made it up itself. I’m not very superstitious though open minded so since it felt like it literally played itself the first time I played it, I called it “The Gift.” It’s a simple riff but there was something soulful and Americana about it that deserved some deeply appropriate lyrics whenever they would come my way.

I put the riff in my pocket for a later date and 3 years later, just a few months ago, I had been moved and inspired by some local artist friends who have songs about religious trauma to consider creating my own song about the effects/morality of being taught as a child that I could be punished for eternity for doing, saying or thinking the "wrong" thing.

When I started putting such words to the guitar riff I could hear a complicated ode to the concept of “free will” and the lyrics flowed out almost as easily as the music had.

Now that I’ve finished and produced it, I like to think it feels somewhat like a Santa origin story folk tale. Whatever your relationship is with the “season of giving” I made this one for humans. I hope you hear something human in it. Merry Christmas, happy holidays and peace and wellbeing to all that you love. Gratitude for the support/ears/hearts.
